At MJR Tumblers, we know that the difference between a "nice" rock and a show-stopping gemstone often comes down to one critical, yet frequently overlooked step: burnishing.

What is Burnishing?
Burnishing is the essential final "cleaning and brightening" stage of the tumbling process. While the polishing stage creates the shine, burnishing removes the microscopic film of polish and minerals—often caused by water hardness—that can leave your stones looking hazy or dull once they dry.

How It Works
  • Deep Cleaning: It flushes out lingering slurry and grit trapped in tiny crevices or "vugs" that water alone cannot reach.
  • Surface Brightening: For rocks, it strips away stubborn residues to reveal the true "wet look" luster underneath.
  • Metal Finishing: For jewelry and metals, burnishing goes a step further by smoothing out microscopic peaks and valleys through "cold flow," which compresses the metal's surface to create a mirror-like finish and increase surface hardness.

Why MJR Tumblers' Proprietary Blend is the Best
Our specialized Burnishing Soap is not just your average soap that can actually cause more harm than good. We’ve developed a Proprietary Blend specifically formulated for high-performance tumbling.

  • No "Concrete" Residue: Unlike common detergents, our blend acts as a powerful water softener, preventing polish from drying into a rock-hard residue.
  • Barrel Safe: Many household soaps contain additives that can degrade rubber tumbling barrels. Our blend is strictly pH-balanced and oil-free to protect your equipment.
  • Superior Luster: Our proprietary formula creates a high-density, frothy slurry that holds contaminants in suspension, ensuring they rinse away completely rather than settling back onto your stones or metalwork.

Target Applications
  • Primary: Rock Tumbling: Use after your final polishing stage for 1 to 4 hours (or overnight) to achieve that professional, mirror-like finish.
  • Secondary: Jewelry & Metals: Perfect for use with steel shot to brighten silver, copper, and brass. It removes oxidation and surface burrs while work-hardening the metal for a more durable finish.
Pro Tip: Perform the "Buffing Test"—rub a dry, polished stone vigorously on a piece of denim for 10 seconds. If it gets shinier, you need a burnishing cycle with our Proprietary Blend.

1 Pound of our Burnishing soap is APPROXIMATELY 48 Table Spoons or 3 cups.

How much to use:
3lb Barrel        1 to 1.5         Tbsp
6lb Barrel        2 to 3            Tbsp
10lb Barrel      3.5 to 5         Tbsp
12lb Barrel      4.5 to 6         Tbsp
15lb Barrel      5 to 7            Tbsp
20lb Barrel      6.5 to 10       Tbsp
25lb Barrel      8.5 to 12.5    Tbsp
30lb Barrel      10 to 15        Tbsp
40lb Barrel      13 to 20        Tbsp (1.25 cups)
60lb Barrel      20 to 30        Tbsp (1.5 cups)
How much is in each grit kit?

The rule of thumb is 1oz of grit per pound of rocks you're going to polish for step 1 and step 2 and 1/2oz per pound for step 3 and step 4.

For example: A 30 pound grit kit doesn't not mean 30 pounds of grit. That would be 30oz of step 1, 30oz of step 2 and 15oz of step 3 and 15oz of step 4.
